Roman Pantheon FAQs

  • Pantheon is a Greek word meaning "to honor all Gods".
  • The Pantheon was designed by the Emperor Hadrian (AD 118-125) who replaced an earlier temple built by Marcus Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus, in 27 BC.
  • Originally a temple for all pagan gods, the temple was converted into a church in 609.
  • The Pantheon is made perfectly harmonious by the fact that the distance from the floor to the top of the dome is exactly equal to its diameter.
  • The Roman Pantheon is the largest unreinfored solid concrete dome in the world, and the most complete Roman monument.
  • At the top of the dome is a large opening, the oculus, which was the only source of light.
  • The front portico has three rows of 8 columns, each one with a diameter of 1.5m.
  • The huge, 60 ton weighing columns used for the portico were quarried in Egypt. They were transported all the way to Rome using barges and vessels.
